50’s Motels Featured Heidi Swank tells me the new issue of “Las Vegas Architecture” Magazine has a feature story by Bob Stodal about the last remaining motor hotels that line Fremont Street and Boulder Highway. Las Vegas Architecture is the annual publication of the LV chapter of the American Institute of Architects. I understand it’s available at Barnes and Noble.
VintageVegas Photostream Nick Bennett sent me a link to a terrific Flickr photostream called “Vintage Vegas”. It’s got lots of interesting pictures of VintageVegas.
Helldorado Parade: It’s an evening parade, at 7pm on May 16th, followed by the Helldorado Rodeo which is going on for 4 days. If you want to be in the parade with us, just show up an hour early and find us. I’ll be driving the float for Dr. Lonnie Hammargren, and the Friends of Classic Las Vegas. The “Welcome to VeryVintageVegas” banner will be on the float, and any of our friends, fans and readers are welcome to walk along with us.
May is Archaeological Awareness and Historic Preservation Month – Here’s the whole schedule of events.
One of the highlights will be the Southern Nevada Culture and History fair at the Springs Preserve on Saturday May 9th from 10am to 2pm.
Tour an archaeological excavation in progress and see the remains of ancient pithouses. Learn more about history and prehistory of Las Vegas Valley and about how local organizations are working to preserve the community’s heritage. Call Annalisa Helm at 702-822-7742 for information on specific events.
Morelli House – The next open house will be part of Historic Preservation Month activities. May 9th from 3 to 6pm. If you’ve never seen the ICONIC Mid Century Modern Home of Antonio Morelli, here’s another opportunity that you should not miss. Call 822–6536 or [email protected] for reservations.
Downtown News – We found a terrific site with lots of Downtown Las Vegas news. It’s called, aptly, Las Vegas Downtown News. I’m having lunch next week with Jeff Burbank, who writes all the articles. Hopefully we’ll find a way to work together.
This Place Matters – A reminder again, that we need to load up the “This Place Matters” website with the best of Vintage Las Vegas. It’s a project from the National Trust For Historic Preservation. I did about a dozen of them, and then never uploaded the pictures or the descriptions. I promise to do it this weekend. Please help us with this project.
As I mentioned when I first published it, I think it’s a good idea to use the same headline for the photo as you do for the description, since you have to do the two parts separately.
Even if you want to memorialize a place that just personal to you – your home, where you grew up or whatever, then there’s a category for that as well.
Real Estate News – Consumer confidence is rising, first time home buyers and investors are out in droves. The inventory has dropped dramatically. Banks are making deals on the short sales and we’ve added them back into the inventory for those who are patient. I’m even willing to list short sales now that it’s actually possible to get them closed. More on the short sales this weekend.
