City Of Las Vegas To Celebrate Historic Preservation Month With Annual Award Presentations

I’m currently serving my 3rd term as an appointed member of the Historic Preservation Commission for the City of Las Vegas. We are very pleased with this year’s winners.

The annual Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards are scheduled to be presented at the Wednesday, May 26, meeting of the city of Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission. The meeting will take place at noon in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 495 S. Main St.

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

• Bricks and Mortar Award: For individuals, organizations and agencies that have sponsored a historic rehabilitation, compatible addition and/or energy-efficient upgrade project.
• Preservation Education Award: For individuals, organizations and agencies that have sponsored a historical interpretation project (such as historical markers), artwork, publications, workshops, curricula and/or research.
• Advocacy Award: For individuals or organizations that have worked to save a threatened resource.
• Career Achievement Award: For individuals who have an exemplary record in the field of historic preservation and/or archaeology.

This year’s winners include nine individuals:

• Kamran Fouladbakhsh – for the renovation of the former automobile garage located at 1327 S. Main St. into the Nevada Brew Works and HUDL Brewing Company.
• David Schwartz – for educating students at UNLV, as well as the general public, about the history of gaming in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada.
• Tina Balint, Mitch Cohen & Amy Raymer – for their roles as a Nevada Preservation Foundation volunteers in supporting and promoting educational programs and projects that focus on preserving the history of Las Vegas.
• Elizabeth von Till Warren – for more than three decades worth of tireless efforts to advocate for the preservation of historic places in Las Vegas, including the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, the Las Vegas Springs archaeological site, the Historic Fifth Street School, the Las Vegas High School and the Huntridge Theater. (This will be awarded posthumously to her family.)
• Claude Nelson Warren – for more than three decades of archaeological research efforts, documenting and preserving historic places in Las Vegas, including the Old Mormon Fort, the Helen Stewart Cemetery and the Las Vegas Springs.
• Claytee D. White – for her decades of dedicated work to preserve the history of Las Vegas by collecting, documenting, and preserving oral histories from the diverse communities who call Las Vegas home. She also has served as an advocate and advisor on numerous committees and boards.
• Dennis McBride – for his decades of dedicated work to preserve the historic resources of Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, including the curation of the J. Florian Mitchell photographic collection, his nine years as director of the Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas and his many publications on Las Vegas history.
